Connect to Contentment

Are you a “should” person?

?Or ?

Are you a “could” person?

I consistently hear clients belittle themselves with sentences like:

“I should do yoga more.”

“I should cut out sugar.”

“I should meditate.”

“I should be a nicer wife.”

“I should feel better in my body.”

Each one followed with “but… I can’t… there’s no ______ <time, money, energy, way.>” 😞

Each time we use the word “should” it shuts the door of possibility.

Notice how it makes your body feel when you use the word “SHOULD”?

Do you feel light? Creative? Interested? Motivated? Alert?

🚫NO. You feel heavy, dull, achy, tired, fatigued. 🚫

You’ve already lost the possibility of success and completely annihilated the possibility of contentment. 🤦🏻‍♀️

NOW, what does it feel like when you use the word “COULD”?

Do you feel bright? Intrigued? Awake? Relieved? Comforted? Accepted? ✨

Contentment (Santosha) is one of the five Personal Practices of yoga philosophy and is a mindset that embraces the COULD. ✨

With Santosha, we train our thoughts to stay steady so that our sense of worth is not dependent on meeting “should-y” expectations (either internal or external).

Instead, our internal sense of contentment is independent of the circumstances happening around us.

Using “could” instead of “should” reminds us that possibilities are endless, our locus of control is inward, and our thoughts create our reality.

Santosha is hard. But it’s worth considering. (Maybe you could?)
