Meditation is a skill that can be learned and practiced. Initially, looking for a space of quiet stillness between your thoughts can confirm just how busy your mind really is. It may feel difficult, nearly impossible, to slow down your thoughts. However, with time and practice, you can learn to distinguish individual thoughts and clearly examine the quality of each thought.

Meditation is an invitation to become intimately aware of each thought moving through your awareness so that you can discern which thoughts are helpful in your healing journey and which thoughts set the stage for unease and frustration.

With this awareness, you gain the skill of choosing which thoughts to give your time and energy; you gain the ability to perceive your mental landscape with wisdom and clarity.

This awareness allows you to respond with compassion and ultimately uncover an inner contentment and ease.

meditate your weight.

Meditation may be the key to sticking to a healthy eating plan, accurately perceiving your body’s hunger cues and staying at your optimal weight without a diet plan. Research shows that your chance of staying at your optimal weight after weight loss programs of increases when you incorporate relaxing breathing techniques and meditation practices into your daily routine.

When you’re meditating, you’re honing your ability to perceive hunger cues, mitigating stress hormones that lead to weight gain, strengthening your resolve to make healthier food choices, and enhancing your self-image.

The Mindfulness Connection:

Mindfulness is the ability to identify and examine the individual thoughts that pass through your consciousness. It’s integral to the practice of meditation, where the goal is not to stop or judge your thoughts, but to notice them enough to choose healthy thoughts over unhealthy thoughts.

In her book, Meditate Your Weight, Tiffany Cruikshank founder of Yoga Medicine, posits that your most helpful ally in weight loss is your mind-body connection, which is significantly strengthened by meditation and mindfulness practices. “Mind-body connection is essential for long term permanent weight and health changes. From research we know that the small changes we can commit to over time are much more impactful on our long-term health; the mindfulness we bring to our daily habits can be life changing,” Cruikshank explains. “A non-judgmental awareness [is] additional protection that allows us to be human and imperfect along the way, safeguarding us from the roller coaster of falling off the wagon of our extreme health plans.”

This program with Lisa Ash Drackert, Yoga Medicine Therapeutic Specialist, includes a Book Study of Meditate Your Weight by yoga teacher and health expert Tiffany Cruikshank as well as detailed yoga, breathing, and meditation instruction to help you approach your health with confidence and a sense of empowerment.

fall 2018 special events and workshops.

It is always my honor to share the teachings of yoga. Sometimes, I look at out the class of students gathered together at Westport Yoga KC and am stunned; I think, “This is so cool! These people are so eager to learn! They CHOSE to put their self-care at the top of their already-full ‘priority list’ and show up on the yoga mat to practice and learn these incredible teachings!”

And I know– life’s ‘priority list’ does fill up quickly. Mine does, too. But here’s the thing: the teachings of yoga show us how to navigate our lives with grace and commit to a gentler way of being that is grounded in self-care, care of others and care of our communities. As Donna Farhi says:

“Yoga does not remove us from the reality or responsibilities of everyday life but rather places our feet firmly and resolutely in the practical ground of experience. We don’t transcend our lives; we return to the life we left behind in hopes of something better.”

I offer you this array of Special Events and Workshops in hope that you will firmly and resolutely choose self-care to heal your everyday experience. Please join me. Registration for Fall 2018 Events and Workshops opens July 18, 2018 here: Westport Yoga KC Pricing

extra grateful: a new 1:5 gratitude challenge.

Here’s a new Gratitude Challenge for you: 1:5. In the traditional 30 days of gratitude approach, our list often becomes stagnant, rote and trivial by the end of the month. We start listing things that are fun, fast and easy, instead of listing things that truly bring us back to our Highest Self and the practice of Gratitude.

So, a shift on an old theme: 1:5. Name ONE thing you are EXTRA grateful for and 5 people who make it possible. As we know, writing an acknowledgements page is good for the soul: in the end, we cannot take ANY of this stuff with us, but our relationships and the people we love leave an impression on our Soul.

For example:

This year I’m extra grateful to be the Owner and Curriculum Director of Westport Yoga KC. It’s not an easy job, but it’s worth it because I get to share generously the teachings of yoga and meditation with willing and beautiful Souls every day. I have 5 incredible teachers who teach at Westport Yoga KC and make my dream possible: Thank you Maris, Amie, Sedona, Jesse and Kelly. (Of course, it’s really my STUDENTS who make it possible… but I’m sticking with the above Fantastic 5.)

This year I’m extra grateful that I am HEALTHY! Severe allergies, sinus issues, skin rashes and energy imbalances seemed to be the norm for most of my life and this year I am HEALTHY! It’s feels like a miracle; a big shout out goes to my ‘health squad’: my nutritionist, my acupuncturist, my Yoga Medicine teacher and my best friend Russell Clive who gets me out on walks daily. (And also my Ironman who buys a vanload of vegetables every Monday at Costco so our crock-pot is continuously full of soup. (See.. limiting it to 5 people is actually a bit difficult…)

Name 5 specific things you are EXTRA grateful for and the 5 people who make it possible.

Take a minute to thank some of these people who make your life happier, healthier and more whole.

The practice of Gratitude is just that: it is something we practice. Gratitude is the key to living a wholehearted life; it is the key to living in the Present Moment and learning to see the Divine in all the little moments we tend to overlook.

A Guided Meditation during which we consciously name, reflect on and appreciate specific blessings in our life reminds us that the only reasonable response to being alive is that of Gratitude. As always, I’ll be teaching a Full Guided Gratitude Meditation at Westport Yoga KC this month.

leaving for my sacred 2017 sabbatical.

Just like last year’s modern day sabbath, I’m heading out for my annual sabbatical. I’m eager for all the fun things I’ve got planned, but dreading 3 weeks without my best friend Russell Clive.

Who could say goodbye to this sweet boy?

What do I have planned?

I’ll see family (SoCal and Mimi, here I come!) and friends (I am beyond thrilled to train again with Yoga Medicine and my teacher Tiffany Cruikshank again) and live in van down by the river.

I’m not joking. Check out this sweet ride.

My Ironman built out a conversion van so we could drive to Canada for this sabbatical. We plan on celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary by hiking and biking and camping and lounging in the epic vastness of Canadian National Parks and generally being in awe of God’s crazy beautiful earth.

And most importantly, I’m taking a sacred Sabbath. In my study of Spaciousness (kha) I examined the sacred spaciousness of time, form and Soul (read previous posts). Sabbath is just that: a period of time devoted to being uncluttered, unplanned, unencumbered by ‘shoulds’ and ‘musts.’

Gerald May reminds us in his book The Awakened Heart that spaciousness has its roots in the Hebrew letters yodh and shin, combined to form the word that denotes freedom and removal of constriction. From these same letters emerges the root word for salvation. It makes sense to me that salvation is associated with spaciousness because it means being free to choose love over fear and choose consciously my thoughts and actions, as opposed to being directed by impulse, reaction. Spaciousness and rest, in time, in form and Soul is true freedom. For me, salvation is embracing moments for self-care of the Soul and consecrating those moments Godward.

And so, in a world that no longer values Sabbath, in a world that consistently tells me that working really hard makes me really worthy and resting makes me irrelevant, I’m taking a Sacred Sabbath Sabbatical to re-discover the freedom of spaciousness.

While I’m away, resting and rejuvenating and practicing self-care of the soul, please:

See you at the end of August, all rested and refreshed.

yoga for pain relief.

Calling all allergy sufferers! (Excuse my stuffy nose-nerd-voice.) Yes, you! This yoga magic in the picture above is seriously the best remedy in the world for the headaches, stiff necks and swollen glands rampant in the oh-so-fragrant springtime.

I’ll be teaching this, along with a dozen other magical yoga tricks for healing your painful aches, this upcoming Saturday, April 29, 2017 in my Yoga for Pain Relief” Workshop. The workshop is held at Westport Yoga KC and runs from 2-4 pm. You can find details and registration links on our brand-spanking-new website: www.westportyogakansascity.com

Yoga is a system of thought (science) and worldview (cosmology) which originated in the Indus River Valley about 5,000 years ago and evolved to include:

  • A medicine component: called Ayurveda
  • A movement component: called Asana
  • A breathing component: called Pranayama

All 3 of these components of yoga can contribute to a healthy mind and body. Yoga is primarily a way worldview that orients oneself in the universe to be free from suffering (or self-inflicted frustration.) In this workshop, we will learn how to use the therapeutic poses in the yoga system to relieve pain in the places we most commonly experience chronic pain: neck, shoulders, back, hips and heart. Stress manifests in our bodies as discomfort; learning techniques to relieve pain and discomfort opens a world of healing.  I’d love to share with you the ways to relieve pain and suffering in the mind and in the body– the workshop is filling up quickly, so please register soon! (Open registration is $35 (WY Members are $25).

See you soon,

mark your calendars (and a SALE!)

Hey you guys- I know this time of year gets busy (fast!) which is why I need you to add a few events to your 2016 Holiday Calendars today.

I’m hosting 1 donation yoga class, 1 SALE on private yoga lessons, and 1 workshop this fall. You don’t want to miss any of them, trust me.

The Gratitude Flow on November 23rd is my favorite class of the year. The night before Thanksgiving, we meet to practice yoga by candlelight and share in my Guided Gratitude Meditation.  It is always a magical experience which opens our hearts to give and receive deep gratitude.  All donations benefit The Rose Brooks Center, which helps women and children re-build their lives after leaving abusive households.

Also, my Introduction to Meditation workshop is back– I host this twice a year at Westport Yoga KC and it always sells out. Learning to meditate with a teacher takes all the guess-work out of it… and you go home with a manual that guides you through starting your own home practice.  One registration fee includes all three sessions (sign up below.)

And lastly, I’m making holiday shopping easy for you this year: through December 20, you can purchase 3 Private Sessions as a gift. All the details are below; it’s an awesome deal!  Use the contact form on my website to request an invoice or email me: ash.lisamarie@gmail.com.  Happy Early holidays!

yoga pants on a honeymoon.

After 1.5 years of engagement, my IronMan and I tied the knot on Saturday October 1, 2016 at a venue in the Crossroads District of Kansas City, Missouri. (In the same neighborhood as our first blind date! Did you know we met each other at a yoga class!?)

So happy to marry this incredible man and seek adventure with him every day!

We are heading to the Northeast during peak fall foliage for a tour of the White Mountains. It’ll be fun to explore a new corner of the country; we are staying at huts on the Appalachian Trail that are ‘hike-in only’ and then travelling to Burlington, Vermont on Lake Champlain. We are looking forward to lots of adventuring, hiking up some gnarly peaks, and hopefully some epic yoga pics!  The fun thing is that my friends at Lululemon CCP store gifted me white yoga clothes and new white baseball cap so even while I’m hiking I’ll look like a bride!

Remember, even if you aren’t planning a trip right now, you can engage in a Micro-adventure and even travel Nowhere.

While I’m gone, please enjoy my audio Guided Meditations. Try this new one called “So Hum Meditation”, which brings you closer to the unity with the sound of your breath.

Much love, I’ll catch you when I get back– as Mrs. Lisa Ash Drackert!
